Why does Cao Xueqin like Daiyu so much?
❤️Cao Xueqin spared no effort in describing Daiyu. While describing Daiyu’s background and beauty, he compared her to the legendary beauty Xishi and the faithful official Bi Gan, using all the best metaphors on her. He also gave detailed descriptions of her eyes, eyebrows, dimples and tearstains. He gave her creativity and wit, making her stand out at the girl’s poetry club as the three-time champion. Daiyu doesn’t just have beauty, she also has brains. All her other characteristics, such as her fits of temper, innocence, and liveliness, were thoroughly—but not superfluously—described by Cao, crafting her into a sad and alluring character; none of the other girls received treatment on this level.
💝Cao likes to write about her, or rather, Cao finds comfort in writing about her. Under Cao’s pen, Daiyu, a stubborn, courageous, smart, and melancholic girl, became the most spectacular out of all the fair ladies “surpassing in behaviour and understanding”. She is a lotus in the water, growing out of the mud unsoiled. Pure and self-disciplined, she is a cut above the crowd, a blossoming flower that gives off a sweet fragrance. Rouge’s critique, a commentary of the novel, states that “romantic love intoxicates like wine”. The love between Lin Daiyu and Baoyu, just like wine, is truly the intoxicating kind.
💕In “The Dream of Red Mansions”, the two bared their hearts to each other several times. Their conversations are often surprising, like bolts out of the blue, strong, rich and mellow like wine. The dialogues cut to the chase, like the sound of silk ripped in two. Not only are they memorable, they also leave a deep impression on the heart, like striking thunderbolts, giving the reader an epiphany. Is this not true love or what?
