Northwest's Salmon Population May Be Running Out of Time
A Washington state report put it bluntly ( ): Because of the devastating ( ) effects of climate change and deteriorating ( ) habitats ( ), several species of salmon in the Pacific Northwest are “on the brink of ( ) extinction ( ).”
Of the 14 species of salmon and steelhead trout in Washington state that have been deemed ( ) endangered ( ) and are protected under the Endangered Species Act, 10 are lagging ( ) recovery goals, and five are considered “in crisis,” according to the 2020 State of Salmon in Watersheds report.
“Time is running out,” said the report, which is produced every other year ( ) by the Washington state Recreation and Conservation Office. “The climate is changing, rivers are warming, habitat is diminishing ( ), and the natural systems that support salmon in the Pacific Northwest need help now more than ever.”
Researchers say recovery efforts — involving state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, local conservation groups and others — have helped slow the decline of some salmon populations. The report found that two species — the Hood Canal summer chum and Snake River fall chinook — were approaching ( ) their recovery goals. It also noted that no new salmon species had been added to the endangered list since 2007.
“We are at least treading water,” said Kaleen Cottingham, director of the Washington state Recreation and Conservation Office. “We have not, however, seen the kind of progress ( ) that we had hoped for.”
With the effects of climate change expected to accelerate ( ), researchers said that more must be done to prevent further population decline and the possible extinction of some species.
Salmon play a vital ( ) role in the environment, economy and culture of the Pacific Northwest. At least 138 species depend on salmon for their food in some way. Salmon support an estimated ( ) 16,000 jobs in the fishing industry, and they are a draw ( ) for tourists.
Before the 20th century, an estimated 10 million to 16 million adult salmon and steelhead trout returned annually to the Columbia River system. The current return of wild fish is 2% of that.
One of the largest factors inhibiting salmon recovery is habitat loss. A growing human population has led to development along the shoreline and the addition of bulkheads, or sea walls, that encroach ( ) on beaches where salmon generally find insects and other food. More pavement ( ) and hard surfaces have contributed to an increase in toxic stormwater runoff ( ) that pollutes Puget Sound.

Sometimes healing is dark. Sometimes healing is laying in your bed at midnight analyzing every dysfunctional part of you.
Sometimes healing is saying sorry first, it’s admitting when you are in the wrong. It’s admitting when you’re sad, when you’re not in a good place.
Healing isn’t full of good days only. Healing is filled with taking one step backward to take two steps forward, it’s always changing. It’s exhausting for sure but slow progress is also a progress.
There will be great days and there will be dark days, and we can still heal on both.

A key strategy in our COVID-19 battle is regular testing. With the recent cases at markets and food centres, residents living near some of the hotter spots can collect Antigen Rapid Test kits to test themselves.
Visited the collection points at Teck Ghee and Cheng San today. Many residents were there to get their kits. Some told me they wanted to make sure they and their families were OK. Glad they are doing their part to protect themselves and the community.
Unfortunately, the KTV and Jurong Fishery Port clusters have spread to many markets and food centres. That is why the Multi-Ministry Taskforce announced this afternoon that we will revert to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) from this Thursday, 22 July, until 18 August. Dining-in will again cease and group sizes will be limited to 2 people (https://str.sg/33Y9).
This retightening will help slow the spread of cases. We hope to avoid multiple subclusters breaking out around each market and food centre, like what happened around the Bukit Merah View Market. It will buy us time to get more people fully vaccinated, especially not yet vaccinated seniors, who are most at risk.
We are all disappointed by this step back, but COVID-19 is a formidable foe. We have to feel our way forward, and be prepared for setbacks along the way.
Overall we are making good progress. Three quarters of us have had at least our first jab, while half have completed both jabs. We are much safer now than six months ago. In 4 weeks’ time, if all goes well, our vaccination coverage should be much higher, and we should be able to relax the measures. We are not quite in the new normal yet, but steadily getting there. – LHL

I consider myself to be a multitasker now because I can answer rapid-fire questions and workout all in one ?
.
I was thrown some questions to answer when I worked out. The most important thing to keep in mind when you are new to workout is to start slow, even if it's just 2 minutes stretching. There will be setbacks and times you want to quit. ❌❌❌
But don't give up easily because at one point, you will be successful!
.
Here are a few tips to help you to start working out ?? .
✅ Start Small, Start Slow and Track Your Progress ? .
✅ Find a Workout You Enjoy and Look Forward To .
✅ Play Some Music to Keep Your Energy Up ?
.
We all struggled when we got started but you are not alone!! Always remember, consistency is the key?️. .
Remember to check out this video to see how well I can handle these rapid-fire questions??.
Find out if I’m willing to stop eating Cheetos if every bite gives me 1kg and more. ?

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1 SAMPLE ANSWER BAND 8 TOPIC PATIENCE
? Link bài mẫu band 8 cùng chủ đề: http://bit.ly/344FLY4
- Tiếp tục chuỗi IELTS Speaking Part 1 theo chủ đề, hôm nay chúng ta cùng tham khảo bài mẫu từ Ms.Quỳnh theo topic Patience - Kiên nhẫn nhé.
Video cript:
1. Are you a patient person?
It’s a case by case situation but generally speaking I’m an extremely patient person. I can be very consistent with my goals. Besides, I don’t see the point of getting all riled up for the things that are out of my control, because anger can distract me from objective and logical thinking in stressful situations.
2. Do you think you are more patient now than when you were younger?
Absolutely! Especially when puberty hit and I was under a lot of pressure from my parents as well as from peers, I was cranky all the time. But now, although I have a lot more things going through my head , I've learned to get into the habit of keeping track of my thoughts by writing out everything that I have to do in order to see what makes me impatient. This will help me slow down and focus on one task at a time and remove those things that stress me out.
3. When are you impatient?
I could get really irritated if somebody takes a lot of time doing something. And what’s even worse is that, I can lose my cool easily when waiting for somebody for a long time and then being stood up.
4. Can you explain why some people are not very impatient?
Well, I think this is because they all want instant gratification and want things without waiting. Besides, most people have several tasks in their head, and they jump from thought to thought without taking the time to finish one task first. We live interrupted lives as we try to multitask and it is frustrating when we feel we aren't making progress.
