ในอดีตที่ชาวสเปนเดินทางเข้ามายังดินแดนแห่งนี้ และผนวกดินแดนแห่งนี้เป็นหนึ่งในอาณานิคม
พวกเขาเชื่อว่าดินแดนแห่งนี้น่าจะมีแร่เงินอยู่มาก จึงเป็นสาเหตุที่ทำให้ดินแดนแห่งนี้มีชื่อเรียกว่า Argentina

และเริ่มทำให้เศรษฐกิจในหลายประเทศในยุโรปเฟื่องฟู

เมืองสำคัญอย่างมิลานและตูริน ทางตอนเหนือของอิตาลี ก็ถือเป็นที่ตั้งสำคัญของโรงงานอุตสาหกรรมมากมาย อย่างเช่น โรงงานเหล็กกล้า ต่อเรือ สิ่งทอ และผลิตอาหาร
ชาวอิตาลีทางตอนเหนือ เริ่มมั่งคั่งร่ำรวย และสภาพบ้านเมืองก็มีความเจริญ

รู้หรือไม่ว่า ทวีปอเมริกาใต้ประกอบไปด้วยประเทศเพียง 12 ประเทศ

โดยทวีปนี้มีพื้นที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับที่ 4 ของโลก มีจำนวนประชากร 428 ล้านคน คิดเป็นประมาณ 5.6% ของจำนวนประชากรโลก

ปี 2019 มูลค่า GDP ทวีปอเมริกาใต้มีมูลค่า 113 ล้านล้านบาท หรือคิดเป็นสัดส่วนประมาณ 4.2% ของมูลค่า GDP ทั้งโลกที่ 2,705 ล้านล้านบาท

หลายปีที่ผ่านมา สภาพเศรษฐกิจของหลายประเทศในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ไม่ค่อยดีนัก
เราลองมาดูตัวอย่างเหตุการณ์สำคัญๆ ของแต่ละประเทศ

วิกฤติเศรษฐกิจเวเนซุเอลา ที่เริ่มต้นมาตั้งแต่ปี 2010 ซึ่งวันนี้ก็ยังไม่สิ้นสุด
ประชาชนหลายล้านคนต้องพบกับความยากลำบาก
คนจำนวนมากขาดแคลนอาหาร ยารักษาโรค

ในปี 2018 เงินเฟ้อของประเทศเคยพุ่งไปถึง 10,000,000%
และนับตั้งแต่ปี 2015 มานั้น มีประชาชนกว่า 4 ล้านคน ต้องอพยพหนีความยากจน ออกนอกประเทศ

เวเนซุเอลาในอดีตเคยเป็นประเทศที่ร่ำรวยที่สุดในทวีปอเมริกาใต้
มีปริมาณสำรองน้ำมันดิบมากที่สุดในโลกถึง 300,878 ล้านบาร์เรล

มาวันนี้ GDP ของเวเนซุเอลาเหลือเพียง 2.2 ล้านล้านบาท เล็กกว่าประเทศไทยถึง 7 เท่า

ข้ามมาที่บราซิล ประเทศที่มีมูลค่า GDP คิดเป็นสัดส่วนกว่า 50% ของมูลค่า GDP ของทวีปอเมริกาใต้

การใช้งบประมาณจัดการแข่งขันฟุตบอลโลกในปี 2014 ด้วยจำนวนเงินกว่า 480,000 ล้านบาท โดยเฉพาะการก่อสร้างสนามฟุตบอลแต่ละแห่งที่ใช้เงินมหาศาล

ทำให้รัฐบาลต้องขึ้นภาษี ตัดงบประมาณสาธารณะบางส่วนลง จึงทำให้ประชาชนชาวบราซิลจำนวนมากไม่พอใจรัฐบาล

ที่สำคัญสิ่งที่ประเทศได้รับกลับมา เมื่อเทียบกับงบประมาณที่ลงทุนไปนั้น ถือว่าไม่คุ้มค่ากับผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจ

นอกจากนี้ การทุจริตคอร์รัปชันครั้งใหญ่ที่สุดของบราซิล ภายในบริษัทน้ำมันแห่งชาติของบราซิลที่มีชื่อว่า Petrobras สร้างความเสียหายอย่างมากให้แก่รัฐบาล หลังจากผู้บริหารของ Petrobras รับสินบนจากบริษัทก่อสร้างต่างๆ เพื่อแลกกับการให้งานโครงการต่างๆ ของ Petrobras ด้วยมูลค่างานที่สูงมาก

ซึ่งทั้ง 2 เหตุการณ์นี้ นำไปสู่ความไม่สงบเรียบร้อยทางการเมือง การออกมาประท้วงรัฐบาล ทำให้เศรษฐกิจของบราซิลเข้าสู่ภาวะถดถอยในปี 2014 โดยกินระยะเวลาเกือบ 3 ปี และนับเป็นการตกต่ำทางเศรษฐกิจครั้งรุนแรงมากสุดอีกครั้งของประเทศ

อีกหนึ่งปัญหาคือ หนี้สาธารณะต่อ GDP ของหลายประเทศในทวีปอเมริกาใต้นั้นถือว่าอยู่ในระดับสูง หลายประเทศมีการใช้งบประมาณขาดดุลในการกระตุ้นเศรษฐกิจมาต่อเนื่องยาวนาน หลายโครงการที่รัฐบาลนำเงินไปใช้ไม่คุ้มค่ากับผลประโยชน์ที่ประเทศควรได้รับ

บราซิลและอาร์เจนตินา 2 ประเทศที่มีความสำคัญต่อเศรษฐกิจของทวีปอเมริกาใต้ ปัจจุบัน มีหนี้สาธารณะต่อ GDP เพิ่มสูงขึ้นมาก เมื่อเทียบกับในอดีต

ปี 2019 บราซิลมีหนี้สาธารณะต่อ GDP อยู่ที่ 76% เพิ่มขึ้นจาก 52% ในปี 2010

ปี 2019 อาร์เจนตินามีหนี้สาธารณะต่อ GDP อยู่ที่ 90% เพิ่มขึ้นจาก 43% ในปี 2010

อย่างกรณีของอาร์เจนตินา หนี้สาธารณะที่สูงทำให้นักลงทุนจำนวนมากขาดความเชื่อมั่นในค่าเงินเปโซอาร์เจนตินา โดยนับตั้งแต่ปี 2015 ค่าเงินเปโซอาร์เจนตินาอ่อนค่าลงไปกว่า 3 เท่า เมื่อเทียบกับเงินดอลลาร์สหรัฐ

ล่าสุดรัฐบาลอาร์เจนตินาเพิ่งผิดนัดชำระหนี้ (Default) จ่ายดอกเบี้ยหุ้นกู้จำนวนกว่า 16,000 ล้านบาท

ซึ่งสำหรับอาร์เจนตินานั้น ก่อนหน้าที่จะเจอเหตุการณ์นี้ เศรษฐกิจได้เข้าสู่ภาวะถดถอยมาเป็นเวลา 2 ปีแล้ว

ขณะที่การระบาดของ Covid-19 ในทวีปอเมริกาใต้กำลังรุนแรงมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ทำให้เศรษฐกิจของหลายประเทศในทวีปแห่งนี้กำลังเจอแรงกระแทกจนทำให้เรื่องที่เลวร้ายต่างๆ กลับย่ำแย่ลงไปอีก

ปี 2018 อัตราการเติบโตของ GDP เท่ากับ 0.2%
ปี 2019 อัตราการเติบโตของ GDP เท่ากับ 0.1%

แต่ในปี 2020 นี้คาดกันว่า GDP ของทวีปอเมริกาใต้จะติดลบกว่า 5% หมายความว่า มูลค่าเศรษฐกิจของทวีปจะหายไปเกือบ 6 ล้านล้านบาท

ปัจจุบัน ทวีปอเมริกาใต้มีจำนวนคนยากจน โดยมีรายได้ต่ำกว่าวันละ 59 บาท อยู่ประมาณ 19 ล้านคน แต่วิกฤติเศรษฐกิจในครั้งนี้ คาดว่าจะทำให้มีจำนวนคนยากจนเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 29 ล้านคน

ยังไม่มีใครรู้ว่า ความท้าทายต่างๆ ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นกับทวีปอเมริกาใต้จะจบลงเมื่อไร

แต่ที่รู้แน่ๆ ก็คือ ถ้าไปถามชาวอเมริกาใต้
